I have this thing for sepia, and family photos, and braces, and brother-sister relationships, and those handful of images you’ll look back at 20 years from now and treasure!   This is one of those.

Saturday afternoon in the studio – four families, seven children, a dozen hats, juice boxes, stuffed animals, assorted toys,  and plenty of laughter!    As much as I love outdoor portraits, there is nothing like the simplicity of a black and white studio image and the beautiful expressions of children.  Thanks to Rachel K Rose for being part of this amazing day!

This past weekend during a family portrait session, I asked my client if she wanted me to capture an image of her with her daughter (they bear an AMAZING resemblance to each other).   It took her absolutely no time to say “I have plenty of those – but would love to have a photo of her with her father.”   What a great reminder!    I know when I dig into my shoebox of old family photos, it’s rare for me to find any with just me and my father.  What a treasure it will be for this lovely young lady to have had these photographs taken with her dad!

So we had a conversation before our portrait session about wardrobe and Mom decided it would be best to let HER decide what she wanted to wear to have her picture taken.  GREAT call!   No surprise, she chose her princess dress but insisted on wearing just ONE shoe (not pictured).   Honestly, what girl (little or big) doesn’t, in their heart of hearts, want to be a princess!

Next time you have a birthday party celebration and want to make sure you get photos of your guests, create a colorful “photo wall” with balloons, confetti, and streamers in the background.   Put a table of props beside it and let your guests have fun posing for the camera.  My nieces dreamed up this little idea – and also provided signs and markers for guests to create their own messages.  It was so much fun that even their grandparents got into the picture!

Happy Birthday Becky!
